Rat Control Process

Contact Us

Simply call or e-mail our office, Laura or Claire will give you any advice required and book an appointment for our rat control experts to visit at a time to suit you.

Site Survey

Our pest control technician will survey the property for signs of rat infestation to identify approximate rat population, entry points, how they are navigating the building and likely food sources. For large properties, landlords and commercial properties and detailed rat survey will be emailed to you.

Internal Domestic Rat Control

Initial Visit

The initial visit will be the key visit, our technician will identify where the rats are coming from, how they are entering the building and identify the infestation level. Set up the treatment and give an estimated length of treatment.

Follow Up Visits

Follow up visits will be at weekly intervals, until the rat infestation is cleared. During a follow up visit we will check for bait take and re-bait where needed, collect any rat carcases if any are found during the visit (all rat carcases are removed and disposed of via our registered waste carrier) and complete any proofing which may be required.

External Domestic Rat Control

External rat control treatments will be tailored to each site's specific needs, the use of rodenticide is avoided where possible, we try to suggest environmental changes to make the area less attractive to the rats and set traps where possible. Sometimes the risk to animal or human health is very high, or the rats may be affecting a building nearby which will then enable us to use rodenticides. In this case we carry out weekly visits as a minimum and ask you help check for rat carcasses; this minimizes the risks of secondary poisoning of non-target species. Rodenticide will only ever be used while there is a current active infestation!

Commercial Rat Control

Commercial rat control will usually be carried out as part of a 12-month monitoring contract whereby our pest control technicians will visit the premises monthly as a minimum. Our rodent monitoring contracts are usually based on an initial rat control clearance and then the remainder of the contract will be monitoring for rat activity with non-toxic blocks. Then as soon as any rat activity is seen, the non-toxic blocks can be replaced with rodenticide to maintain a rat free work environment.

After Care

Our pest control technicians will provide detailed proofing recommendations, install drain valves or arrange full drain surveys where required.

How can I stop rats from entering my house?

Proofing your property for Rats is usually a case of surveying the building structure for defects, such as hole in brick work around pipes, broken air bricks, poorly fitted doors and the like. However sometimes they enter from under the building via drainpipes or old land drains.

Can rats climb out of my toilet?

This is a question we are asked very regularly, and unfortunately yes; it is possible! But not as common as some people lead you to believe. One thing to make sure of is that if you have any toilets in rooms that are rarely used, make sure they don't run dry! The water trap in the bottom of the toilet stops gasses leaving the sewer system and help stop rats too.

How do I know if I have Rats or Mice?

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell without evidence such as droppings or teeth marks on chew cables, rats will obviously be much noisier and heard running along the rats runs in the loft. Whereas mice are more likely to be heard just scratching and lightly scrabbling around. Rats also tend to follow a bit of a routine and be heard late at night, where mice can be heard any time of day.

If rats have been using the loft long enough, it will be clear to see their runs on the insulation and likely to find droppings.

Do Rats live in drains?

Yes, broken drains or other drain faults are the most common cause of rat infestations. Especially internal rat infestations!

The main sewers are overrun with rats in many towns across Berkshire and Hampshire, so any small cracks or bad connections can give the rats a place to chew through the pipes.

Can I disinfect where the rats have been?

Yes, we provide a specialist treatment which uses a thermal fogging machine to disperse a disinfectant specially formulated to kill all diseases and viruses carried by rodents, this treatment is quick and easy! You can remain in the house while the treatment is carried out! for more info visit >> Rodent Treatment Aftercare

Pest Control For Rats Near Me

(Rattus Norvegicus)

Appearance:
An adult brown rat can reach 30 -35cm with a long, thick bald tail of about 10cm. Adult brown rats have coarse brown almost black fur, with a paler underside.

Distribution:
The brown rat is an imported species originating from North-East Asia, the brown rat has spread over most of the world largely displacing the Black Rat (R. rattus), becoming a well-known pest and carrier of many diseases. The brown rat is classed as vermin and it can be found throughout the British Isles, they must be subject to heavy culling and eradication schemes by local pest control companies.

Habitat:
The brown rat inhabits wet and damp areas including rubbish tips, drains, sewers, rivers, ponds, ditches, and buildings usually entering though underground drains and sewers. Rats will live in groups and can dig well, building nest in burrows sometimes with several entrances.

Habits and Biology:
The brown rat is a very good swimmer, being able to dive and swim under water for some distance, sometimes being mistaken for Water Voles. They are highly intelligent and are excellent climbers, using their scaly tails and clawed feet to help them grip, rats can even climb brick walls making access to the loft quite easy. They have well-developed senses of hearing and smell. Rats do not hibernate during the winter. Due to rat infestation and defecation, some water areas can carry Weil's disease, a flu like illness that can become serious. Do not work in water with open cuts or wounds and wear waterproof gloves if possible. Associated with disease and reviled for its habits the Brown Rat reflects the wastefulness of society flourishing on refuse and waste food, but possibly performing a useful task?. In cities it is said that you will rarely be more than 3m (10ft) away from a rat. Preyed on by Tawny owls, other large birds of prey and foxes. The main attractions to draw rats to a domestic property are wild bird feeders dropping seeds on the ground, compost heaps, rubbish sacks being left out where rats can get to them, broken drains, keeping chickens or livestock or having plenty of cover for the rats to move undiscovered.

A Rats Diet:
Rats will eat almost anything, including small vertebrates, other rats, meat, fish, vegetables, weeds, earthworms, crustaceans, nuts and fruit, however they prefer starch and protein-rich foods, such as cereals. They sometimes store food to return to later. Typically nocturnal, they will sometimes be seen foraging for food during the day.

Breeding:
Rats can produce up to seven litters of six to ten, (and sometimes near 20) young a year after a gestation period of 21-24 days. Newborn rats are blind at birth opening their eyes at about 15 days, weaned after 21-28 days.

Rat Control:
By removing the following you will greatly reduce the risk of rats moving onto your property. Due to a change in the brown rats gene's there are now a strain of rodents that are immune to the commonly used rodent baits such as Difenacoum and Bromadiolone. DKG Pest Control work in an area with confirmed L120Q (the Berkshire / Hampshire strain of resistant rats).
